Sunshine Coast Kayaking
While the Sunshine Coast isn't an island it is surrounded on many sides by a lot of ocean!
Vancouver Island perfectly protects the Coast's Georgia Strait coastline from vigorous Pacific weather conditions, which means you can canoe or kayak along the Coast from Gibsons to Pender Harbour and paddle in relatively safe and calm waters most of the year.
Sechelt Inlet - often referred to as the Inland Sea - offers large expanses of protected sea kayaking including Narrows and Salmon Inlets.
Kayaking companies operate out of the inlet offering rentals, excursions and great lessons for beginners.
Experienced kayakers are often drawn to the Coats for day trips and longer excursions. However recreational kayakers can still access safe and fun adventures throughout the Coast.
With a couple of lessons most people find that can rent and handle a recreational kayak and enjoy so much of what the Coast has to offer.
If you are looking for adrenalin-pumping white water, try The Skook - a tidal rapids at the head of Sechelt Inlet called Skookumchuck Narrows. Skook is a Native shishalh word meaning powerful waters - strong enough to swallow an entire boat. This area is for very advanced kayakers with plenty of whitewater experience.
